Construction
Singing Rock has kept the weight of the Penta down by using only EPS foam and a polycarbonate shell. At only 7.2 ounces, the Penta is the lightest helmet on our list for less than $100. This is mainly because nearly all budget helmets use the less expensive but heavier ABS plastic for their shells. The negative of this lightweight configuration is that it will only fit certain heads, making it crucial to try it first before buying. The helmet itself is available in four colors that are certain to match any harness or climbing shoe, should you want to really look good at the crag.
Adjustability
The Singing Rock Penta climbing helmet has some excellent ventilation. There are four vents on each side and three vents along the back of the helmet that make for a very breathable bucket. The adjustment, however, is very limited. There is only strap adjustment along the back of the helmet, and no adjustment along the ears. Again, this makes it quite important that the initial fit is what you are looking for; female climbers are likely to find the helmet more comfortable than male climbers.
Accessories
Singing Rock made sure to include headlamp clips on this climbing helmet. They do look a little flimsy but should be able to get the job done. As for other accessories, there isn’t much to mention (it is a budget helmet after all). There are 11 vents along the side and back of the Penta. They are located fairly low, leaving a lot of room on the crown of the helmet to provide protection.
The Bottom Line
The Singing Rock Penta is a great low-cost rock climbing helmet, and very lightweight for only $70. The drawbacks are that it really is made for certain heads; if you have a slightly larger head, like myself, you may be out of luck. It will only go up to about 23.5” (60cm), whereas the large Black Diamond helmets will go up to 25” (63cm). If it fits your head, the lightweight material will make the Penta a comfortable helmet for long days on the wall and well worth the price.
