What We Like: Durable, Included compression sack
What We Don’t: Heavy, Not very packable
It’s hard to believe that you can find a three-season mummy sleeping bag from a trusted name like Marmot for only $100. While we liked the build quality and the warmth of the Marmot Trestles 30, it didn’t quite hit the mark as a backpacking sleeping bag. The synthetic insulation hindered both weight and pack size, which both fall near the top of the priority list for gear specs. For more casual overnight trips or car camping, this bag ticks several necessary boxes and would make a great addition to your camping arsenal. Best of all, the manufacturer’s lifetime warranty makes it all the more appealing.

When it comes to high-quality camping gear, you can rarely go wrong with Marmot. What started as an outdoor-enthusiast social club has since grown into a worldwide brand with a highly sought-after apparel line as well as tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags. Those who have perused the Marmot product line can attest to the fact that much of it can cost a pretty penny—their WarmCube™ Expedition sleeping bag retails for just shy of a grand! However, for only one-tenth of that price, you can snag the Marmot Trestles 30, a three-season sleeping bag built for the budget-conscious hiker. Does this cost-cutting also compromise the quality? We had to delve further and find out for ourselves.
Warmth
This mummy-style sleeping bag utilizes high-loft Spiraloft LT polyester insulation, and as its name suggests, its temperature rating is 30°F (-1°C). The tested lower limit is 26.2°F (-3.2°C) while the tested comfort temperature is 36.1°F (2.3°C). Before we proceed, it’s worth noting that there are three versions of this bag: the regular, long, and long wide with varying dimensions and weights. Fill weight for the Trestles 30 ranges from 30 to 33.8oz. To help lock in the warmth, the Trestles 30 uses a snagless draft tube. The 3D hood construction is intended to envelop your head and features a pair of drawcords to tighten it down.
Comfort
We had hoped that the weight of this bag would translate to additional comfort, but unfortunately, the 70D polyester liner was not exactly buttery smooth. The fill material is designed with what Marmot calls a Wave Construction Top and Blanket Construction Bottom to optimize loft and comfort. There was certainly a decent amount of cushion underneath, a feature we appreciated
The Trestles 30 is decently roomy for a mummy-style sleeping bag. The regular size accommodates up to 6’ in height with circumferences of 62” in the shoulders, 57” in the hips, and 47” at the feet. The long bag will fit people up to 6’6” tall with 1 to 2 more inches in the shoulder, hips, and feet.
Weight & Packed Size
As previously mentioned, the synthetic fill on this bag does no favors to its overall weight, and the roughly 2 pounds of insulation is more than double what you’ll find in similar down-fill sleeping bags. Total weight ranges from 3lb 1oz for the regular to 3lbs 9.2oz for the long wide. This is the heaviest mummy bag in our review, and for the same price, you could opt for the REI Co-op Trailbreak 30 and cut nearly a pound from your pack weight.
We were pleased to find that the bag comes with an included compression sack that also works as a storage sack, but the sack itself was slightly on the heavy side at 4.2oz. Compressed volume is 10L for the regular and 11L for the long wide, which is best described as “good, not great.”
Features
There were several fun features on this bag that boosts its versatility. Along with its main zipper—a full-length, locking two-way zipper—on the opposite side of the bag, there’s a secondary zipper that allows you to fold down the top for added ventilation. This feature is especially great for those of us who like to have our arms hang outside our bag on warm summer nights. There’s also one more zipper on the outside of the bag that serves as an external stash pocket large enough to hold a cell phone. Finally, along with the compression sack for easy packing, the bag also features a pair of loops that enable you to hang this in your closet when you’ve returned home from your journey.
The Bottom Line
It’s hard to believe that you can find a three-season mummy sleeping bag from a trusted name like Marmot for only $100. While we liked the build quality and the warmth of the Marmot Trestles 30, it didn’t quite hit the mark as a backpacking sleeping bag. The synthetic insulation hindered both weight and pack size, which both fall near the top of the priority list for gear specs. For more casual overnight trips or car camping, this bag ticks several necessary boxes and would make a great addition to your camping arsenal. The manufacturer’s lifetime warranty makes it all the more appealing.
