What We Don’t: Pricey
Mammut offers an everyday cragging or high alpine helmet with the Wall Rider. It is priced at $120 and weighs in at a comfortable 8.5 ounces (for a large). Not to mention, the helmet looks really cool. We were impressed with the design of the helmet and the materials used to keep weight down. The Mammut Wall Rider is also available in a version with MIPS, for added rotational protection for your brain. It only weighs an extra 0.5 ounces but costs $180 ($20 more than the Black Diamond Vision MIPS).

Construction
The Mammut Wall Rider rock climbing helmet is made almost entirely of EPP foam, the lightest on the market. The additional weight comes from the durable polycarbonate shell that has been put on top of the helmet. This polycarbonate shield is much more substantial than the layer of polycarbonate that we have seen on helmets like the Black Diamond Vapor. There’s no need to worry about it getting too banged up while it is stored in your pack. The nylon harness is high quality and feeds into the helmet well.
Adjustability
The Mammut Wall Rider uses minimalistic but effective webbing on the harness as the rear adjustment points. The rear adjustment is done by pull tabs that, once found, are easy to adjust. It is much easier to do so while the helmet is on, as a piece of advice. Along the ear, the tabs that attach to the chinstrap offer some sliding so the chin strap can be moved closer or farther from the neck depending on how you like the fit.
Accessories
Mammut utilized the two front headlamp tabs and a bungee system at the back for the headlamp or goggle system. This is a favorite in the industry, as it offers the most versatility and ease of use, not to mention that the headlamp is actually more secure behind the bungee versus four tabs. The venting along the helmet is great, and it even has two front vents that allow a breeze to hit your forehead. The breeze on the forehead really seems to cool down your head or at least makes it feel cooler. There are some larger vents along the sides and back that will offer excellent cooling throughout the day.
The Bottom Line
We think this is a great helmet. While the price is a bit higher compared to the similar Black Diamond Vision helmet (both standard and MIPS versions), it has a different fit. One of the most important qualities in a helmet is how it fits your particular head, so if the Mammut is a good fit, it’ll likely fit better than the similar Petzl Sirocco or the Black Diamond Vision. So as always, if you are able to try on the helmets first, it’ll definitely help you make a more educated decision.
