Best Tent for Extreme Weather of 2021

The Hilleberg Anjan 2 GT is one of the most durable and weatherproof tents of our review. It is over-constructed but will be able to conquer just about anything thrown its way, making it our Best Tent for Extreme Weather of 2021. The durable material has added to the overall weight, and it isn’t the most spacious tent in the review. However, the GT comes with 27 square feet of vestibule space—the most of any tents we looked at. While this impressive package sounds incredible, it also comes with a hefty price tag of $875. So if you have to sell your house to afford it, at least the tent will be as weatherproof as your old home.

Comfort

The Hilleberg Anjan 2 GT is like a nylon home with its own garage. The interior of the tent is tapered, leaving lots of room in the shoulder for two campers. The interior space is only 28 square feet, but the design of the tent makes it feel larger. The 27sqft vestibule also helps to make up for any interior shortcomings. That’s right, it is only one square foot smaller than the tent itself. So when you go camping, you can bring everything including the kitchen sink. There is plenty of room for you, your gear, and a furry friend.

The interior of the tent comes with two pockets near the door and a clothesline, which is a nice addition that helps to keep wet clothes off the ground. The inner tent also has a completely mesh door and a large mesh rear window, providing airflow and eliminating condensation when pitched correctly. Hilleberg recommends pitching the front into the wind, so the back window can vent air.

The Anjan offers 39 inches of headroom in the middle and tapers towards the back. It is not as livable as tents with two doors and a more symmetrical design. The inner tent isn’t large enough for two adults to sit up very comfortably, and the single door does cause some issues if you are trying to avoid disturbing your tentmate.

Ease of Setup

The setup of the Hilleberg Anjan 2 GT can be insanely easy. The longer of the 3 poles is marked with red tape. The poles then get pushed through pole sleeves. There is only one opening to help keep tension and make for easier feeding of the pole. Once the pole is through the tent, there is a pole cap that the free end sits in, and a tensioner can be used to ensure that it can’t move around in a windstorm. The stakes are burly and once the back stakes are in the ground, the whole tent is pulled forward from the front, and the setup is done. The inner tent can remain attached to the fly and be erect with the fly at the same time. This is an incredible feature for easy setup. The fly can also be constructed first, leaving the tent body in a pack and dry while the fly is being set up in a storm. Essentially, the fly of this tent can be a stand-alone structure.

Hilleberg sells several accessory options, such as an entirely mesh inner tent body if you are camping in warmer locations, as well as pole holders that enable you to pitch the inner tent on its own.

Weatherproofing

This tent is as close to bombproof as they make them for under $1,000. Having a primarily solid nylon inner tent body with a bathtub floor design repels blowing snow or sleet. The nylon manages condensation extremely well. On warmer nights, the back of the fly can be rolled up, exposing the large back mesh window of the inner tent. The tunnel style is perfect for howling winds and driving rain or snow.

Durability

The fly is made using Kerlon 1000, a silicone-impregnated ripstop nylon that is very strong, especially for a 3-season tent. The fabric is set, so it is far less likely to be punctured. If it is punctured, it should not tear or make smaller holes worse.

The stakes seem to have been an afterthought and are not as durable as every other part of the tent, which is too bad because they are essential for the construction of the tent.

Weight

The Hilleberg Anjan 2 GT comes with a packed weight of 4lb 10oz (2.1kg), which is fairly heavy for something branded as a “very light tent.” On our list, it is the fourth heaviest tent in front of the REI Co-op Trail Hut (5lbs 15oz), the Half Dome SL 2+ (5lb 5oz), and the Marmot Tungsten 2 (5lbs 4oz), which are all less than a third the price of the Anjan 2 GT. What Anjan has made the weight trade for is durability and weatherproofing. The weight of the tent may negate it as a trekking tent, but it’s better for something like bike touring or sea kayaking, where weight is not the most important factor.

The Bottom Line

This tent is not for everyone. The $87 price alone makes that clear. Only veteran campers who know what they’re looking for will likely consider the tent. It also isn’t a great lightweight hiking tent, at well over four pounds. If you are looking for a robust tent with lots of vestibule space and won’t be carrying the tent on your person, it can be a great choice. For sea kayakers or bikepackers headed into hostile environments, it would be an excellent option.
