If you are looking for a mitten that can do it all, look no further. Dakine’s Titan Gore-Tex Mitten is a 3-in-1 powerhouse that comes packed with accessories you didn’t know you needed. The mitten itself is two parts: a Gore-Tex-lined outer shell and a touchscreen-compatible liner glove. These two pieces come together to form the “Titan,” a do-it-all-and-then-some mitten that surprised us. For $70, Dakine has packed value-adding accessories into this mitten with additions such as waterproof stash pockets and wrist leashes. Dakine has brought a 3-in-1 mitten to the party with their Titan Gore-Tex Mitten. It’s almost like bringing a gun to knife fight, but before we start drooling, how does it perform? For $70, it is a pretty good bargain for a Gore-Tex product that you will be using to keep your hands dry and warm throughout the winter season. What’s more, is that this is a 3-in-1 mitten that actually performs like one. The shell is insulated so it can be used alone, and the liner glove is even touchscreen compatible. Overall, there is a lot of versatility that comes with this mitten, especially at this price.
Material
The breakdown goes a little like this: the shell is 100% polyester with a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment. The palm of the mitten is Rubbertec, a third-party producer of all things rubber. So right off the bat, the outer shell is durable and made to last. Add a Gore-Tex + Gore Warm technology insert to the shell, and you have a mitten that on its own is a high-quality piece of kit. The interior lining of the shell is a soft and comfortable tricot, so you can definitely wear these without the liner gloves.
Insulation
The shell carries the insulation in the 3-in-1 combo, using a high-loft fill and 280g of the insulation throughout the mitten. This insulation weight competes with several of the other mittens on the list. While not a brand-name insulation (such as PrimaLoft), it is warm and holds up to cold temperatures, especially with the Gore-Tex insert providing breathability and waterproofing.
Dexterity and Fit
The beauty of the mitten is that the inner glove will allow plenty of dexterity without sacrificing your hand to the elements. Some online reviewers have noticed that the connection between the thumb and forefinger is a bit high and limits the ability to have great control when handling items. This is similar to the problem we noticed with the mittens from Amazon.
Accessories
The accessory list for the Dakine Titan Gore-Tex Mitts is long and fairly impressive, especially for mittens. We have already mentioned the liner glove that comes included in the Titan package, so I won’t bore you with the details there. There is a hardy wrist cinch strap to keep the mittens on and secure throughout the day. At the bottom of the shell mitten is a cinch for the gauntlet-style cuff to keep the weather out if it gets windy. There are wrist leashes attached to the outer shell mitten that keep you from losing them when tagging your friend in an Instagram story using the touchscreen-compatible liner gloves.
Along the thumb of the left mitten is a nose wipe that is very similar to the nose wipe found on the Outdoor Research Carbide Sensor Mittens, while on the right thumb is a feature we have yet to see recently. This rubber goggle squee-gee, for lack of a better term, allows the user to give the goggles a few passes to clear them of icy precipitation that may build up on the chair or on the downhills.
There’s another unique feature that Dakine has brought to the table: tash pockets on the back of the mittens. Not only are they well-sized—enough for a hand warmer to go in and keep you toasty all day—but the zippers are water-resistant, a technology that we did not expect to find on the back of a $70 pair of mittens. The zippers of the stash pockets even have a zipper garage, so that it becomes challenging for any precipitation or moisture to sneak in during the day. This is something we didn’t even think we wanted but now are glad that it’s there.
The Bottom Line
While not the highest performing mittens on our list or the least expensive, the Dakine Titan Gore-Tex Mitts blew us away. The mix of versatility with some quirky accessories makes for a very cool mitten. With a removable and touchscreen-compatible liner glove that helps you manage the delicate tasks coupled with a waterproof and insulated outer shell, these mittens are punching above their weight class. For $70, they are value-packed and are going to impress anyone who puts them on.
