Black Diamond’s entry-level and all-around harness is a good starting point for climbers beginning their journey. A bull horn-shaped waist belt with Dual Core Construction for added comfort will work for most body shapes. The trakFIT leg loop adjustment is super easy to use and holds well throughout a day at the crag. This is a great harness if you enjoy dialing in the perfect fit before spending your day on a hanging belay.

New to climbing? Need a no-frills but highly competent harness to get you into the gyms and maybe test the waters of outdoor climbing? Look no further. The Black Diamond Momentum is the perfect beginner harness that is also capable of some bigger projects and multi-pitches.
Compared to the Black Diamond Solution, the Black Diamond Momentum is more of an all-around harness. Available in a men’s and women’s fits and only weighing 302g or 10.7 oz, this harness will be your workhorse.
Design
Comfort
The Momentum was built for comfort. The [potentially over-] padded waist belt is comfortable to hang around in—as long as it stays in the right place. There have been complaints of the harness riding up along the lower back, which can add pressure to the kidneys, and that is something we all would like to avoid.
The leg loops are a single band of webbing that is padded for comfort, and the comfort is there for sure. The over padding makes it a more noticeable harness while on the body, and that can either be frustrating or something you won’t notice. Certainly, it is not the most comfortable harness in this review, but it gets the job done.
Gear Loops
Four molded gear loops come with the Momentum. They are smaller than they used to be, but for sport climbing, there is plenty of room for all of your gear. Along the rear of the harness is a small loop made for hanging your climbing bag. Again, the design of the Momentum is fairly simple, but it has everything you need to get outside to the local sport crag and test out some projects.
The Bottom Line
For $60, it is hard to go wrong with the Momentum if you are a newer climber. It does not have the most versatile features if you are thinking about using the harness for ski touring or other alpine objectives. The Momentum is offered in “climbing packages” that include a locking carabiner, belay device, and some chalk, and we think this a great beginner package if you are just starting to get into climbing.
