What We Don’t: Pan doesn’t work well as a lid, Minimal cooking performance, Handles can get hot
Presumably named after the city where it was formed (Thousand Oaks, CA), TOAKS is the go-to name in the backpacking industry when you’re seeking high-quality titanium gear, whether it be cookware, cutlery, or the company’s award-winning wood-burning stove. The TOAKS Titanium 1600ml Pot with Pan perfectly illustrates the ultimate goal at the heart of the TOAKS brand. This $49.95 two-piece set includes a 1.6L pot and a 0.5L pan weighing a combined 8.2 oz (232 g), making it the lightest cookware set in our 2021 review and an excellent backpacking companion. Its titanium construction makes it both light and rugged, but its cooking performance is not quite on the same level as similar sets that utilize different metals as well as a nonstick coating.

Cooking & Cleaning
The TOAKS pot and pan is not the most versatile cooker in our review, but it’s quite capable of preparing basic backcountry meals. The graduation marks on the pot (both in ounces and liters) make it simple to measure out water. The full capacity of the pot is technically 1.75L if filled all the way to the top of the rim, but we’d caution anyone from testing this, as any water that spills over onto the handle may render it too warm to use. The TOAKS’ boil time of 3 minutes 25 seconds is quite competitive, and can be attributed to the thin metal, which allows for instantaneous heat transfer.
Unfortunately, this fast heat transfer is also a drawback of the TOAKS, as it is prone to burning food if not watched over carefully on low heat. That being said, the pan is large enough to fit half-slices of bacon or 3-4 eggs at once. Some users recommend cooking the bacon first and using the leftover grease to keep the eggs from sticking, given that there is no nonstick coating. Another problem we encountered with this set is that the pan doesn’t work all that well as a pot lid since its rim is wider than that of the pan. Many hikers prefer to use the pan right-side-up rather than upside-down since the bottom will recess inside the rim, which helps it to stay in place. Another option is to add the $15 TOAKS D145 Pot Lid to your hiking kit, which is a much better fit.
Cleanup isn’t quite as straightforward as it is with pans that utilize a ceramic or Teflon coating, but the rounded edges are helpful for wiping out. If you do manage to burn any food on the bottom, this can be more easily cleaned out by softening it with some boiled water.
Weight & Packability
The TOAKS Titanium 1600ml Pot and Pan have a total weight of 8.2 oz (232 g), making it the lightest cookware set in our review by a country mile. The only set to come remotely close is the MSR Ceramic 2-Pot Set, which is lightweight by most standards but still nearly double the weight of the TOAKS at an even 1 lb. The packed dimensions for the TOAKS are 5.75” x 5.75” x 5.38”, making this arguably the smallest cookware set as well, especially when you consider that it can still nest a 220g gas canister and a small stove inside it. It could also be used to store a smaller TOAKS pot like the TOAKS Titanium 900ml D130mm Pot.
This particular TOAKS set does have one flaw on the packability front, which is how the pot and pan are stored together during transport. The pot and pan stack lid-to-lid and there is no locking mechanism to hold the pot and pan in place, so you’ll need to utilize the included mesh storage bag to keep everything together.
Durability
One of the most impressive qualities of the TOAKS Pot and Pan is their strength-to-weight ratio. This is titanium’s big claim to fame; it can take a licking and keep on ticking, all at a fraction of the weight that you’d find with a stainless steel set like the MSR Alpine 2-Pot Set, which comes in at a whopping 1.62 lbs (734 g). That’s TRIPLE the weight of the TOAKS, with just slightly more volume for cooking. Titanium can also withstand high temperatures and resist corrosion, and its lack of a nonstick coating means that you can utilize metal utensils and scrub away as hard as you like without having to worry about compromising its cooking performance.
Features
The TOAKS Titanium is not exactly encumbered with features; much of what you’ll get is already detailed in the product name. The pot and pan each have their own dedicated handle, which is more convenient than other sets that utilize removable pot grabbers or handles. The pot has a two-piece handle that overlaps for better grip during use and folds flush to the outer wall when packed away. The handle on the pan can be easily removed by pinching down on the sides, but also folds flush to the underside of the pan during transit.
The Bottom Line
There’s plenty of reasons why the TOAKS Titanium 1600ml Pot with Pan is a mainstay amongst lightweight backpackers. It works well as a solo cookware set but is large enough to accommodate two-person adventures as well. Both the pot and pan’s titanium composition give them a huge durability boost while also saving weight, two metrics that are heavily favored by the ultralight crowd. However, its “versatile” pan doesn’t make for the world’s greatest pot lid, and titanium was not our favorite cooking material due to its quick heat transfer. All in all, this set is a mixture of pros and cons that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but is more than capable of brewing a cup of tea.
